Cocktails and Game Night

With all the miserable weather we’ve been getting in San Diego lately, we’ve been staying in and playing board games a lot lately. Whether it’s just the two of us or we invite friends over, we always have a blast. Typically, we’re also craft beer drinkers, but we can appreciate a quality cocktail as well. My go to is usually a Gin and Tonic and Josh sips on Manhattans or an Old Fashioned most of the time. We decided to switch up a bit and try to make some drinks we don’t make at home often.

The Margarita
  • 1.5 oz gold tequila
  • 0.5 oz orange liqueur
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup
  • 3 limes, juiced
  • 0.5 orange, juiced

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice, shake, and strain into a glass with fresh ice. For the salt rim, take a wedge of lime and run it across the rim. Pour kosher salt onto a flat surface and rim the glass.

Sake-tini
  • one parts gin
  • one parts sake
  • one parts sanpellegrino, or other citrusy soft drink (optional)

Pour your gin and sake into a shaker with ice. If you’re like Josh and aren’t used to strong gin flavors, feel free to include some mellow citrusy soft drink, which will help even out the earthiness that the cocktail would normally have. Shake vigorously and pour neat into a chilled glass. An actual martini glass would be ideal, but not everyone keeps those on hand, so really any wide mouthed glass will do. No garnish necessary.

The weather’s finally starting to clear up here and we see nothing but sunny skies moving ahead. As it warms up we hope to continue experimenting with cocktails and finding new favorites. Let us know if you try either of these! What’s your favorite weekend pick me up drink?
